Words are without a doubt the basic foundations, the “bricks” of a language.

Learning new words may currently be a real challenge for you, maybe it's your dream to be able to say a long list you wrote down by heart.

For some reason some students I have spoken to have gone obsessed trying to learn an X amount of words. The believe if they know a certain amount of words (for example 1000 words) they will be a fluent English speaker

Let me tell you a secret...

...there is no amount of words or lists you need to memorise to speak English Fluently!

A lot of students I have come across have tried memorising, and that led them to feel disappointed and frustrated because it was to hard, and they never achieved their goal.

Why?

Our brain tends to select the information that it receives and discard what it considers unnecessary. Your brain works on its own rhythm and it “self-regulates” when it comes to organizing information.

To really understand and process that information you need to follow a few steps:

Step 1 Understand: start by identifying the word and getting a deep understanding of its definition in English.

Step 2 Context: Analyse how the vocabulary is used in context by looking at example sentences

Step 3 Use: the new vocabulary: create sentences and use the new vocabulary in daily conversations to see if you are using it correctly

Now the last step is the most crucial step, and one you are most likely not doing at the moment.

If you complete steps 1 and 2, without effectively completing the third step, the chances of you remembering the new vocabulary in conversations is very very low!

Instead of creating long lists to memorize, a more effective way to learn and remember words is by following these 3 easy steps.

In our community we focus on you using new vocabulary by joining our Facebook group, completing daily challenges and interacting as much as possible. Join our live English practices or book individual sessions.

As much as learning new vocabulary is meaningful, knowing how and where to use it is equally important. And having feedback is crucial to enforce your learning.
