It is every student's dream to learn just by grabbing your book or starring to a page but in reality things are far more complex. If you could just listen to a lesson and memorize the whole concept at one. The “learning by osmosis” idea is just a fallacy, it is an analogy for organic learning, the same way that we learn our parents language by constant exposure to it, but is that all what is needed to learn a language?

The truth is that is not until the kid starts to work on repeating or imitating sounds, exploring the uses and features of his voice and sounds can emit with it that real learning starts. It has to involve experimentation, observation and practice.

The same happens to us when we try to acquire new knowledge, it is not enough to look into information, or joining a class, or practice group until you start participating actively and experimenting on your own.

In other words, learning is work.

Learning requires hard work, dedication, input and feedback, learning by osmosis does not work. Is not until you have done something on your own, created something out of your mind that you notice that you have actually assimilated the knowledge. Every piece of information has to be put to test and trial. Sometimes you will make mistakes but that is also part of the learning process and often we remember more the things we have make mistakes with than not.

So, next time you join a class or a group or any type of activity that involves learning, be proactive, work, practice and get feedback, only then you will know if you have achieved the intended goal.
